Smart Radio

PandoraA few weeks ago I discovered Pandora. And I love it. Dubbed as the Music Genome Project, you give Pandora an artist or a song you like and it creates an online radio station based on that artist or song — finding and playing songs it considers similar. Amazingly, Pandora generally does a really good job understanding “similar” so it’s a great way to discover new songs and artists you might like.

Pandora is incredibly simple. The first thing you see is the player, which is pretty sweet. It’s Web-based (no downloads required), has a minimalist interface and seamless functionality.

They’ve constant been adding music since the launch in August 2005. Today the Genome’s music library contains over 400,000 analyzed songs from 20,000 contemporary artists.

When I read about how it really works, I was even more impressed. And it’s free. Although there is a subscription level, the only difference between the free and paid account is the free account has banner advertising.

Personally I hope they make a lot in ad dollars so they can keep the project growing.
